Locked Out of Your Car in DFW? What to Do Right Now

It happens to everyone eventually. The keys are on the seat, the fob is in a bag in the trunk, or the door shut a second too soon. Whatever the reason, you’re standing next to your car and you can’t get in. Here’s what to check first, what to avoid, and when it’s time to call for help.

First: is anyone inside the car?

If a child or a pet is inside, or anyone is in danger, call 911 right away. Don’t wait for a locksmith. A closed car can heat up fast in the Texas sun, and every minute matters. The 911 dispatcher will tell you what to do next.

Check the simple things first

Before you call anyone, take two minutes to check:

  • Every door and the trunk. Walk around the car and try each handle. Sometimes one door didn’t lock.
  • A spare key. Is there one at home, at work, or with a family member or roommate who could bring it?
  • Your phone. Some newer cars can be unlocked remotely through the manufacturer’s app or a connected-services line, if you’ve already set that up.
  • Roadside coverage. Some insurance policies, auto clubs, and credit cards include lockout help. A quick look at your app or card could save you a step.

What not to do

When you’re stuck and frustrated, it’s tempting to improvise. These are the moves that tend to make things worse:

  • Don’t use a coat hanger or a wedge and rod. Modern doors are packed with wiring and sensors, and many have side airbags. Poking around inside the door can damage parts that are expensive to fix.
  • Don’t pry the door or the window. Prying can bend the door frame or tear the weather seal, which can leave you with wind noise or leaks later.
  • Don’t break a window unless someone’s safety depends on it. If it does, call 911 first.
  • Don’t keep trying in the heat. On a hot day, get into the shade, drink some water, and call for help instead of working on the car for an hour.

Why call a mobile locksmith instead of a tow or the dealership

A tow truck can move your car, but it can’t unlock it. The dealership usually means getting the car there, and sometimes booking an appointment. A mobile locksmith comes to wherever you’re parked and opens the door on the spot. When it’s done by a trained locksmith, the goal is no damage to your paint, window, or lock.

What to expect when you call

You’ll get a few quick questions: where you are, what car you have, and whether the keys are inside the car or lost. Lockouts and emergencies get priority. You’ll know the cost before we start, with no surprise fees, and then we come to you.

What to have ready when you call

  • Where you are. A street address, cross streets, the name of the lot, or the garage level.
  • Your car’s year, make, and model.
  • Whether the keys are inside the car or lost. This matters, and the next section explains why.
  • Anyone or anything inside the car. Tell us right away if there is.
  • A good number to reach you.

Locked out vs. lost your keys: they’re different problems

If your keys are inside the car, you only need the door opened. Once you’re in, you’re done.

If your keys are lost altogether, getting in is just the first step. For many cars, you also can’t drive away without a key that’s programmed to the car. We can cut and program a new key where the car is parked, so you don’t need a tow. Our guide on what affects the cost of a replacement car key explains what to expect.

How to avoid getting locked out again

  • Keep a spare you can reach, with someone you trust or in a safe place at home, not in the car.
  • Make a habit of the pocket check. Before you close the door, confirm the key or fob is in your hand or pocket.
  • Don’t count on the car to warn you. Some cars beep if a fob is left inside, but not all of them do.
  • Replace a dying fob battery or a worn-out key before it fails at a bad moment.
